Top 5 FAQs About E-Bikes

Jonno Leonard - Friday, December 15, 2017

Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular, meaning we get a lot of people visiting our store in Devonport. Talking to customers, we’ve noticed we often get asked the same questions, so we’ve put together a Q&A of some of the most frequently asked questions.

How Do I Take Care of an E-Bike?

The motor of an e-bike doesn’t require much maintenance, but we recommend a 6 monthly check-up for your bike, scheduled in like a visit to your GP. If you’ve just bought a brand new e-bike, we’ll need to see you again once you’ve hit 200KM, just to check the spoke tightness. After that, just come in for a check-up and keep up the usual bike maintenance in between visits – lubricate moving parts and keep the bike clean.

Can I Ride an E-bike in the Rain?

The words ‘electric’ and ‘water’ don’t seem like a natural combination, but the electrics in e-bikes are weather-resistant and the circuit connectors are marine-grade. This means you can cycle in rain or shine. However, the bikes aren’t waterproof, so don’t go dunking your e-bike in the pool. Total submersion will ruin the e-bike and void your warranty.

How Long Does the Battery Last?

A single battery will last for around 800 charges and then you’ll need to replace it. One charge will take you around 60-70KM if you’re using reasonably heavy motor assist. If you’re mostly cruising along on flat roads, you’ll use less power and a single charge will last much longer. The battery takes around 6 hours to charge from when it’s completely flat, and its life expectancy is based on complete charges rather than top ups.

How Powerful is an E-bike?

An e-bike has a 300watt motor, which is the maximum allowed in New Zealand. Any more powerful and it would be considered a motor vehicle by law. All the bikes have a Shimano gear system and pedal-assist, which amplifies your efforts like plugging in music to speakers. Most e-bikes come with a twist throttle too, so all in all, e-bikes are quite powerful.

Does My E-bike Come with a Warranty?

All Think Electric Bikes’ e-bikes come with a 2 year warranty on the battery and motor, 6 years on the main bike components, and 1 year on all other components. This excludes wear and tear of usage.
