Not biking to work yet? Here's 9 good reasons to do it!

Jonno Leonard - Sunday, February 26, 2017

1. It's really fun!

Biking is exhilarating, and allows you to leave your cares behind, at least for the time you are in the saddle! Zooming along is a rush, and reminds you of a simpler time when 'going out to play on your bike' was an activity in itself, rather than a means to an end. Enjoy it!

Ride Awake, Stay Safe! Be Invisible!

Jonno Leonard - Wednesday, January 25, 2017

So many of us have concerns about our own safety when we are out biking. What steps can we take to keep ourselves upright and intact? Here are some ways I treat the matter (and I mean it about being invisible, read on to find out more...) Read More

Scooters have grown up!

Jonno Leonard - Thursday, December 08, 2016

Scooters are for kids, right? So why have you started seeing grown men (and women) on them, and how come they are doing 25km/h these days?? Read More

'E-Bikes Are For Soft People!'

Jonno Leonard - Sunday, November 27, 2016

We just got back from the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. Luke was riding the 80km with his Takapuna Grammar School cycle team (top team in the country, I'll have you know!), and I had dutifully cheered from various vantage points as was making my way in the family hauler with the rest of the brood to meet up at the finish. So it was a 'share the road' situation, and a good-natured competitor clocked my plate as he cruised past, and pointed out to me (the driver of the rumbling beast) that 'E-Bikes are for soft people'! The cheek!! Read More

Helmet hair or no-helmet hair?

Jonno Leonard - Friday, November 04, 2016
Yup, the pic is actually a real thing, the Lego 'hair helmet'. It's so awesome! It did remind me of the debate around helmets though, and how the highest bike use countries have the least helmet use, and also the least head injuries. As someone who grew up in the 70's/80's, before 'safety' was really invented (Bell released the first commercially sucessful bike helmet in 1975), and back when even the Tour de France riders didn't wear helmets (it only became compulsory in 2003, believe it or not!), it is something I had to make myself come around to wearing. And I feel safer. But am I?  Read More

The child-like wonder of biking (and rope swings)

Jonno Leonard - Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Can you remember the last time you did something you loved as a child but never did as a grown-up? Childhood is filled with grin-on-the-face experiences, stuff you do 'just for fun'. Running. Leaping. Swinging. Whizzing along on whatever you have. And what are the commonalities with these experiences? Motion, in the main. Wind in your hair, sun on your face. And often as a shared experience, egging each other on with other like-minded wind/sun junkies.  Read More

Playing with Fire! (fun times with Lithium ion batteries)

Jonno Leonard - Sunday, October 09, 2016

We now live in a world increasingly powered by batteries, and Lithium Ion batteries in particular. You will find them in your phone, in your tools, in your kids' toys and definitely in your electric bikes! 'Lead acid' is the old-tech, and can still be found in some cheaper import bikes, but the weight and lack of battery life and power make them a poor choice. Read More

Different ebike drive types, (and should you care?)

Jonno Leonard - Friday, September 09, 2016

Just for fun lets divvy up the available ebikes on the market by 'drive system', and see what each one delivers, and how that matches our perceived needs... Read More

Mercury eBike Demo Day in Devonport

Jonno Leonard - Tuesday, August 30, 2016

Windsor Reserve came alive with bright yellow over the weekend of 27th and 28th August, as Mercury Energy brought their  ‘Wonderful E.Bikes’ roadshow to town. Mercury have been running a series of national roadshow events to showcase the bikes and the use of clean energy, and this weekend was our turn in the sun (and the wind, as Saturday proved!).I estimate the number of test rides to be between 150 and 200 over the 2 days, and saw riders from 16 to 90 years old put the demo bikes through their paces with a  circuit up to the Navy Base and back. There was a lot of interest across the board, and most riders came back with a big grin on their face, clearly enjoying the wind-in-the-hair sensation! The ZM crew stopped by, and there was even a passing pod of Orca to really make the visit memorable. For those who missed out, we have the range of SmartMotion bikes in the shop for perusal and testing. You might just find the answer to driving on Lake Road is….not driving on Lake Road!   Read More
